A weekend in London
The British capital has always been known for being one of the most cosmopolitan cities of the world. Travelling to London will mean living so different and intense experiences that they could hardly be compared to any other city in the planet. According to statistics, London is the largest city of the European Union and one of the four main cities in the world, along with New York, Paris or Tokyo. So, open your eyes, relax and be ready to enjoy.
If your stay is going to be short, the best thing is to plan ahead your excursions. Since you have chosen one of the cities with more history of Europe (it was founded around the year 43 in the time of the Romans) you shouldn't avoid the classic spots. The famous Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace or the Westminster Abbey will therefore be a must-visit. The visit to these essential monuments will probably take you at least one day and a half. The other half you can spend it resting at the huge Hyde Park, one of the most well cared for parks of the world. In addition, you'll be able to visit the Serpentine lake or take a horse drawn carriage ride along Rotten Row, like the upper class of London did in the 17th century. Leaving without having approached the Thames is a sacrilege, reason why taking a walk by its banks will be a good option, just where the London Eye is located: a fascinating big wheel with 32 hi-tech glass cabins with panoramic views of the city standing 135 meters high (443 ft).
For the shopping lovers, Oxford Street, of course. It's the main artery of the city and connects with the famous Picadilly Circus Square, usual meeting point of many Londoners. But in London, street markets are very popular and you'll find one for every thing. So, take advantage of the occasion and dive completely into the several options that offer. One of the most famous is Camden Town. It's the fourth most visited place of the city. There, you'll find anything: food, second hand clothes, records, furniture, antiques, etc... It's said to be the street market par excellence. But there's also Portobello, in Notting Hill, or the Covent Garden, at the heart of the city. The department store of Harrods is a British institution. A world famous store founded 150 years ago that began as a simple grocery and with more 4,000 people working in it nowadays.
London also means the chance to visit 180 museums available to our disposal, which the great majority are free. The most well-known and large: the British Museum. Perhaps, you'd prefer to dedicate the rest of the time to nightlife. In that case, London nights offer a wide range of possibilities according to the consumer's taste. The Piccadilly area, for example, is full of theaters competing for the best musical comedies. Because London is one of the most important cities of the world, your visit will surely coincide with some of the concerts of the many international artists who tour in this impressive capital, where you can spot cosmopolitanism everywhere. So, come on, put your best dress on and get into the groovy London night. You will surely repeat in the future. A last advice: don't forget the Soho.
